ISM/ABO Seminar: Good Safeguarding Practice in Music Education
Event description
This event will bring together representatives form music education alongside those within the sport and dance sectors to discuss good safeguarding practice in music education. Debate and discussion of the use of physical contact in music education will be central to the day, and the following key questions will be explored:
- Is the use of touch in music education necessary or conducive to learning?
- If so, what kinds of touch are appropriate? How does practice vary across different types of music education, e.g. for different instrument groups?
- What can we learn from safeguarding practice in other fields such as sport or dance?
- What might constitute best practice in relation to touch in music education?
The day will include panel discussions, in-depth discussion in smaller groups, and feedback sessions. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and there will be opportunities to network with the other delegates. It is hoped that the outcome of the seminar will help contribute to drawing up national guidelines around touch in music education, in partnership with a range of stakeholders.
