Making Music Against The Odds
Event description
Making Music Against The Odds
In these days of deficit and disparity the challenges facing young people from ordinary backgrounds possessed with a burning passion to build a career out of creativity are often daunting. Join us for an evening of music that brings together established and emerging artists who have all managed to succeed despite coming up against such overwhelming odds.
Electronic duo Darkstar paint a bleak yet hopeful image of the future, performing music from their new album Foam Island (Warp) . Taking a snapshot of the social and political climate in Northern England, the album sets samples of interviews with young people from Huddersfield against glittering, floating electronic pop, music that channels the people and emotions they encountered.
Richard Dawson is a dark and distinctive troubadour – writing songs about people and working class life. Influenced by traditional British Folk singing, he often performs a cappella, delivering a powerfully raw performance – almost blue in the face at the end of each song. His own songs are darkly comical – jangly guitars scratch strange rhythms, whilst layered vocals are at times aggressive, at others gentle and sensitive.
Mixing indie-pop melodies with glitching electronics, singer-songwriter Sivu creates a new kind of DIY pop – weaving tales of finding magic in the mundane. Compared to the likes of Alt-J, Gotye and Wild Beasts, he possesses an almost-operatic voice and layers an impressive array of instruments on his records.
Andy Fearn from 21st century punk band Sleaford Mods brings the evening to bouncing climax with a seldom seen DJ set.
