The NYMAZ SEND Music Network Gathering welcomes all those interested in music-making with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Join NYMAZ for an exciting afternoon of practical workshops and presentations, take away new skills to support your work with SEND young people, and meet others working across the SEND and inclusive music sectors.

Open to teachers, Music Coordinators, SENCOs, trainers, music leaders, freelance musicians, and support staff from educational settings or community projects.

Programme includes:

Introduction to Sign-Supported Communication: Through interactive exercises, Accessible Arts & Media will demonstrate methods for communicating with people with disabilities, helping delegates to gain communication skills which can be applied in a range of situations, including Singing and Signing.

Best Practice in SEND Music Education: Sarah Mawby, PhD researcher at the University of Leeds, presents findings from her recent research into the benefits of music education and music therapy for young people with special educational needs, and gives delegates an early insight into a new long-term study of music practice in Yorkshire special schools.

Drake Music – Assistive Music Technology: Drake Music is a national charity pioneering the use of assistive music technology to break down disabling barriers to music-making. In this workshop, delegates will gain hands-on experience of innovative technology currently being used to make music accessible to those with disabilities.

Inclusive Music-Making Ideas: An opportunity to try out musical activities and games to engage children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in your setting.
