Wonder Women: Written in the Margins
Event description
We’ve put together a panel of journalists and musicians, chaired by BBC’s Stuart Maconie, discussing how gender has become a genre and the impact of written media on female representation and stereotyping. Celebrated panellists include Vanessa Reed (CEO PRS for Music Foundation), Laura Snapes (freelance culture writer Pitchfork, NME, The Guardian) Chris Long (BBC Manchester Introducing) and Roxanne Du Bastion (independent singer and songwriter).
Hear acclaimed poet Clare Pollard‘s new free verse translation of Ovid’s Heroines, a 20BC poem written in the voices of women from Greek and Roman myth. Pollard rediscovers the work for the 21st Century, bringing to life a cast of women who are brave, bitchy, sexy, horrifying, heart-breaking and surprisingly modern.
In response to Pollard’s poems, the brilliant musician Serafina Steer debuts an original piece of music commissioned by Brighter Sound as part of Here Come the Grrrls.
The evening will also include a chance to contribute to the Wonder Women Zine in a hands-on workshop led by Manchester based artist and creator of the Chapess Zine, Cherry Styles. This drop in workshop is the perfect introduction for beginners to the art of zine-making and all age and abilities are welcome.
Tickets are £3 and you can book your place HERE.
