CYMAZ Sessions 2013

CYMAZ has been successful in securing funding from Youth Music under the national Musical Inclusion module to deliver a structured music programmed aimed to target those in most challenging circumstances and work towards providing a sustainable programme which builds musical, personal and social skills.

Cornwall Council has contributed towards match funding of this programme.

Research & Development

  • CYMAZ commissioned a strategic piece of research 'Identification of Cold Spots for the Musical Inclusion Programme' during late summer and early Autumn of 2012. This research aimed to identify geographic and demographic areas of Cornwall that currently lack opportunities for young people aged 13 to 19 in challenging circumstances to access quality music opportunities.
  • Out of the 8 areas identified in the report, 4 geographical areas have been selected (in this phase) where young people are living in challenging circumstances .  Those areas are Redruth & Camborne, Bude & Camelford, Bodmin and Newquay.  Partners are being identified now to commence delivery in February 2013.

The Offer

CYMAZ Music Leaders will work in an identified setting to deliver a structured 22 week programme of music making activity linked to specific intended outcomes and objectives with sessions dedicated to planning/consultation/sustaining the activity.

  • A programme of CPD and support will run alongside, including for identified support workers in the setting,
  • A planning and preparation session will take place before the project starts and a session to plan the sustainability to will take place towards the end
  • The programme includes performance/showcase/recording opportunities, signposting, IAG about progression, briefing/debriefing and  on-going review and evaluation

The CYMAZ Sessions will be lead and co-ordinated by the CYMAZ Sessions Coordinatrore who will work with partners to identify and support a trainee music leader, deliver the sessions, bring in other skilled CYMAZ Music Leaders to deliver sessions, organise and support performance/showcase opportunities, provide support and advice around sustainability and signposting for participants.

This model of work is framed around a Community Development ethos, it is intended that young people who access the sessions will be able to maintain and develop their musical and personal development in their own communities and in the wider musical education framework across Cornwall if they choose to.
