How to facilitate co-created music projects

This practical workshop will help to understand the process of leading music projects that are co-created with young people in challenging circumstances. You will explore and discuss the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for working with vulnerable young people in a group situation, including:

-Establishing an environment for successful learning -Facilitating ‘in the moment’ improvisatory creative music making involving all young people -Balancing creativity and informality with structure and boundaries -Producing high quality musical outcomes -Developing your resilience as a music leaders

Gawain will draw on his experiences working with the City of London Sinfonia in the Royal Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital School. The session will blend technology with live instrumentation. Please bring your instrument (and/or voice).

Who is the session for?

-This course is for musicians, producers, classroom teachers, instrumental teachers, animateurs, early years practitioners who either already lead music projects with vulnerable young people and want to extend their practice or who would like to develop their knowledge, skill and understanding in this area.

By the end of the session you will

-Gain knowledge, skills and understanding of leading music sessions with vulnerable young people -Have an opportunity to reflect on your own practice with other music leaders -Gather new ideas and perspectives for music leading -Take away resources for workshop leading
