Student competition to submit songs for Fidel the Musical

Take part in our free competition to write songs for 'Fidel’ - a musical about Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution.

Would you like to write the next big hit for a musical? Could you compose the next 'Don't cry for me Argentina?'

Our free competition to write songs for a brand new musical about Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution has just launched. This is a great project to fill the time between exams and the end of the summer term. The competition also runs in the Autumn term and the final deadline to submit songs is 6th November 2015.

The competition is open to students and those belonging to musical clubs/societies.  This is especially relevant to music students, but also to students studying English, history, politics, international relations or Spanish who can contribute lyrics.   Most schools, colleges and universities are running it as a group project for their music students or in a collaboration between music and other departments such as History or English for the lyrics and then hosting an internal competition and submitting the top three songs. Some institutions are just presenting the opportunity to individual students. Either way, it offers students a chance to express their creativity, have a chance to win a prize, and have their song chosen to be in Fidel – the musical. Students also get to learn about the world’s longest standing political leader – Fidel Castro and the Cuban socialist revolution. Students can learn more about cult figures such as Che Guevara and events such as the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban missile crisis. Cuba has a lot to teach us, from their vibrant music, dance and culture, to their historical and political role as a small island caught up in Cold War politics, as well as the ethical dilemmas of leadership.    For more details visit our website www.fidelthemusical.org   Or email fidel@soton.ac.uk
