Hip Hop Shake Up: Challenging stereotypes of (dis)ABILITY
https://youtu.be/62hAPjlnW9c - THE MUSIC VIDEO IS HERE!
On Tuesday 27th October 2015, we challenged stereotypes of ability and put on a workshop for young people with learning disabilities. This wasn't a regular workshop, It wasn't the usual 'we tell you what to do to advance learning' it was giving people with learning disabilities the freedom to make music how they wanted, with all their own ideas, their own lyrics and their own dance moves.
Two videos will be produced from this: one documentary of the day and one being the professional style music video. The purpose of these videos is to challenge stereotypes of ability, through the art of Hip Hop. This day gave people the freedom to express themselves, with the chorus of the song being 'We're on fire, get higher', written by them personally, symbolising the positive energy felt throughout the whole workshop. These videos gave these young people the chance to experience the freedom any young person deserves, no matter what society’s perception of how able a person is. In the video, the music was all made by them, the dancing was all choreographed by them, and the video is starring them; they are the stars who made this amazing piece of art.
At our inclusive rock schools we have heard our participants use the phrase 'our world', and we feel this sense of segregation needs to be addressed. We would hope our videos could contribute to the understanding around the issues related to disability. We would really appreciate it if you could publicize this video in any way you think appropriate when it's been produced. We want to make a statement, but in order to make this statement; we will need your support.
