Another successful term completed for Surrey Live!

The Summer term was the fourth successful Surrey Live! term of activities which took place in various areas in Surrey such as Guildford, Farnham, Leatherhead, Woking and Addlestone. Surrey Live! is a two year music programme for young people aged 13-18. During weekly sessions, music industry professionals guide the young people in how to create new music, learn an instrument, rap/sing, and to perform in order to achieve their creative potential through the awesome power of music.

Surrey Arts (the lead organisation in the Surrey Music Education Hub) secured Open Module funding through Youth Music for Surrey Live!  for a programme catering for young people from various backgrounds including those from NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), LAC (Looked After Children) and RONI (Risk of NEET Indicator).

So far our dedicated tutors delivered over 500 workshops and tasters, providing sessions in DJ Tech Workshops, Songwriting, Urban Music Tech and Live Band Workshops. The sessions have culminated in performances of original and re-worked compositions, providing an opportunity for all participating young people to show off their skills and share learning.

Tutors involved in facilitating these sessions were Charlie Parker, Zoe Konez, Lou Maggs, Ian Marzouk, Anthea Prince, Dave Tribe, Ken Barrett, Jim Lee, Graham Dowdall, Dan Rodgers

Events

Outside of the regular youth club sessions, we’ve been busy out and about running summer activities sessions at events such as a Looked After Children event (with over 700 attendees) and a Gypsy Skills Event at Epsom Downs (1000+ attendees). We also featured at the Brooklands College Summer Festival in Ashford with the Bus Shelter Sessions.

We had a celebration of the successes so far, by staging a one-day event at GLive in Guildford in April, with 50 young people trying out instruments and technology and full performances taking place throughout the day.

Here is some of the feedback we received from participants and partners;

“I have learnt to play drums, bass and guitar and I now am saving up to buy a guitar.”  Young Person

“Ian has been a great help again this term, working well with the YP and especially encouraging the ones who are a bit more nervous to participate, building up good relationships and rapport.” Chris Secker, Youth development worker Wey Center

“Another participant started to get to grips with the process and really showed that they had good a good voice too, melody and words were layered over simple bass and by adding more complex rhythms developing chords saw the start of a hooky reggae, calypso style work take form, still work in progress, but very good indeed.” Tutor

“The female group member has benefited the most as she tends not to fit in with her normal peer group and this has given her the opportunity to start a new and she has reveled in the opportunity massively increasing her self confidence and made her more outgoing.” Tutor

“Since starting the music production alongside Rhythmix, the young people have progressed extremely well in their musical journey.” Ben Blackman, The Bridge Youth Club leader, Leatherhead, Surrey

“It’s brilliant. I’m getting good at piano aren’t I?” Participant
