In from the Cold: Reflections on mapping and developing non-formal music to address social need in London
In 2012, Sound Connections set out to map public funding for non-formal (out of school) music provision and social need in London, an exercise made possible by Youth Music’s Musical Inclusion grant awarded to us from 2012-14, and extended until 2015.
The mapping led to the identification of so-called ‘cold spot’ areas where music provision was historically low or underfunded, and where social deprivation was high. The report was very well received by the music education sector, with a number of individuals and organisations using the information to better plan their work with young people in the capital.
The original report is available here and we are delighted to publish a briefing paper which shares some of the successes and challenges over the last two years. We hope that you find this document useful in helping you plan your own projects and would be very keen to hear your thoughts and feedback.
