How music-making changed lives in 2013

Youth Music releases its annual Impact Report for 2013.

We know that music-making is life-changing. That’s why Youth Music wants to ensure that opportunities to make music are available to every child in England.

Every year, with the support of our  partners on the ground, we make a real difference to lives of thousands of children and young people across the country. The projects we support regularly report back to us about how our investment has helped to change the lives of children and young people they work with. This information is used to produce our annual Impact Report.

Our 2013 Impact Report demonstrates the postive effects our music-making projects have had on children and young people up and down the country.

What happened in 2013?

Taking part in a music-making activity has many benefits. The young people that we reached reported some impressive changes as a result of their engagement, particularly in:

  • musical development.
  • personal and social development.
  • transferrable skills.

We are currently supporting 411 music projects across England, an increase of 54% on our 2011 figures and the highest number ever since our foundation in 1999.

Over 90,000 children and young people are currently enjoying music-making opportunities with Youth Music’s support, with a current investment of £20.1m. 40% of the new projects we supported in 2012/13 had never been funded by Youth Music before.

We invested £11.2m to ensure that no child misses out on the chance to make music. Our evidence shows that there’s far more demand for our support than we can currently meet, so we are committed to securing additional funding so we can help more music-making projects get off the ground.

We would like to thank the young people, music education professionals and organisations who are making inspirational music every day around England. Without you, there would be no impact to report.
