Modern Marvels
In a new collaboration between Carousel and Screen Archive South East, the pioneering early films of Brighton and Hove were re-imagined by young people from local SEN schools – Downs Park School (Portslade), Downsview Lifeskills Link College (Patcham) and Headstart School (Ninfield).
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, 'Modern Marvels' gave 30 students with learning disabilities, autism and additional needs an insight into film-making and visual story-telling, using a green screen, making music and experiencing making sound effects, working alongside two of Carousel’s experienced film-makers – Tina Dickinson and Jason Eade.
The film soundtracks were created by the Carousel House Band in collaboration with students from the respective schools/colleges

Modern Marvels was a great success and brought together a variety of artists and artforms. I would recommend this project format to other learning disability organisations and SEN educators. The participants were engaged in all the workshops around film making, foley and music and it all culminated neatly into one finished product that could be celebrated through a live event
The project showcase was at the Attenborough Centre Creative Arts in Brighton. The original films created by the schools were screened alongside the heritage films accompanied with a live score by the Carousel House Band.
The films will be shown locally in a variety of local venues throughout the rest of the year. Here’s where you can find them:
