More Music's 'Women in Music Network' update

The Women in Music Network has had various requests for a practical session where we can play music together, so this week is our first ever Women in Music Network Skill Share and Jam.

We may work in the field of music education regularly, but still encounter barriers when it comes to performing - from lack of evening childcare to being the only female on an otherwise all male line up. Often, turning up at an open mic night, walking into music shop, rehearsal room or studio or even picking up a guitar magazine can feel like we are stepping into male territory. It can be intimidating, alienating and sometimes enough to knock our confidence, so much so that we can chose not to participate.

This event is a chance to get together in a safe, non-judgemental space and make some music whilst exploring some of the barriers faced as well as how we can help each other to build up that confidence. It is also an opportunity to demystify the technical side of music. Something as simple as having the skills and knowledge to set up a PA or an electric guitar can help to redress the power imbalance that Mavis Bayton talks about. 'technical language is often used as a power strategy in a mystifying way in order to exclude women.

'This can happen informally amongst groups of male musicians, by sound crews at gigs, by technicians in recording studios and so on. So its is not only that women lack confidence, they are also deliberately excluded from this technical world' (Bayton, 1997)

So… if you have always wanted to perform a song you've written or make some noise in a band, this is your chance!
