Piano Studio Desk
After establishing our music studio sessions with young people, we decided it was time to get a more permanent studio desk. We looked at buying desks or just building a basic desk when we had the idea if it was possible to build one into an old piano. A little research later and we thought we'd give it a go!
Through a stroke of luck we managed to find a piano someone was giving away for free as long as we transported it. With help from a local church we were able to collect the piano the next week and immediately started work on it.
One of the young people we work with does carpentry so helped us with designing and building the new desk. The aim was to be able to build everything into the piano but also be able to pack it all away inside so it just looked like an ordinary piano from the outside. This is partly due to the room we have the studio in is also used by other groups.
Each week we worked on the piano for a few hours at a time, stripping everything out that wasn't needed, leaving an empty frame. We then bought plywood and other parts needed to start creating the desk and bit by bit worked out where everything needed to go.
The project took about 2 months start to finish and all of the young people are really pleased with the final result!
