Inclusive Practitioner Session 3 Effective Engagement
"The best day so far"
A further challenging training session from Phil Mullen who ran the third day of our 4 day Inclusive Practitioner course. It considered Effective Engagement. and provoked animated and lively discussion!
Following on from the reflective practice session last time, Phil set up the day around what you chose to focus on. The structure included working in groups, practical music making and discussion round aspects of engagement. He demonstated how he adapted the day in response to the group.
He certainly packs in an immense amount of content! I intend to be at the final meeting and will be timekeeper!! I think I'll bring some biscuits too - how do I get so hungry in training sessions?
Make use of this discussion group and your notes between the sessions. Several you commented on needing time to digest the theories that Phil has introduced.
The homework Phil set after session 2 might help with this: Investigate 2 educational theories and reflect on your practice in the light of one of those theories.
I have uploaded my notes from the session as a reminder of the contributions everyone made to the Barriers to Engagement post its and the Communication session in the afternoon. I have also uploaded the useful notes Phil provided at the end of the day.
It was great to hear your experiences. Some of you said in your feedback that it was useful to hear from other practitioners finding discussions one of the most useful parts of the day.
Many of you thought the practical musical activities intended to engage groups were something you would find useful:
- Copy me - passing the lead
- Ghosting - working in real time
- Conduction - adding elements
- Voice and movement - using movement
Give them a go at your sessions and let the group know how you got on!
Dont forget!!
Homework for this session: Do a skills audit - What are your skills? How will your skills be of benefit to your work? You Appeal - "You will find these skills will benefit you because..."
I am looking forward to seeing yuo all at the last session on June 13th when we will be back at Colston Hall and the them of the day will be Progression.
