A Safer Steel Project
Like so many musicians across the globe Steelworks have found delivering lesson and workshops a little difficult, which is probably an understatement !
However as we become used to the ‘new normal’ we have been able to build on early opportunities for face to face work adapting and evolving our practice. Working with children and young people with autism/ASD brings challenges (but also many rewards), without the interruption of a global pandemic and 6 months of delivering a project during a lockdown.
Since September we have been able to use safe space settings, wearing face coverings, use of hand sanitiser, equipment cleaning solutions and social distancing to provide a safe teaching experience. This has been in Schools and Community Centres. Our programme delivery planning has changed from medium to short term as we don’t know when a young person or persons will need to isolate, a building might be closed, or we might need to isolate. What would have been seen as an impossible task in January (if anyone remembers that far back ?) is now workable and bearing fruits. Our young people are just as enthusiastic as ever about playing steel pan, and we have added one-to-one tuition as to wrap around COVID aware group work.
