Manchester City will be without Rodri for the trip to Newcastle United after he was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The midfielder was forced off against Arsenal with a knee injury and Pep Guardiola confirmed this week that the Spain international has undergone surgery and will not be fit until next term. It is a seismic blow for City as they seek to chase a fifth straight Premier League title and reclaim the Champions League trophy.

Manchester City travel to Newcastle in the first game of the weekend in the Premier League, with kick-off at 12.30pm at St. James’ Park.

Pep Guardiola’s side face the Magpies in their first league match without Rodri, with the Spanish midfielder set to be ruled out for the season after picking up an ACL injury in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal last week.

Eddie Howe’s team come into the game off the back of a hugely disappointing 3-1 loss to Fulham last week, and will look to spring a surprise on a City side that may still be adapting to the loss of their midfield anchor.

Recent matches between these two sides have thrown up entertaining contests, including last season’s 3-2 win for City in this fixture, and Newcastle will need to drastically improve if they are to take any points today. Follow all the latest score updates from the Premier League below.

Newcastle vs Man City predictions

Newcastle 1-2 Man City (42/5 with SBK)

Man City have won their past seven away league games since a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield in March. However, the Citizens have kept just one clean sheet in the Premier League this season.

Newcastle team news

Newcastle will have to continue without Callum Wilson and Lewis Miley, both of whom aren’t expected back until after the international break. Wilson is yet to feature this season due to a back injury, putting a lot of responsibility on Alexander Isak to lead the line. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are longer-term absentees

Man City team news

As well as the dropped points against Arsenal, there was a massive blow for Man City. Having not long returned to the XI, Rodri picked up a serious ligament injury and now looks like missing the entire season. Mateo Kovacic should slot back into the midfield alongside Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, if Kevin De Bruyne isn’t able to return from injury.

Nathan Ake and Oscar Bobb are also out injured, with the former not expected back until after the international break.

Newcastle vs Man City head-to-head

Newcastle have only won one of their last 13 meetings with Man City in all competitions.

The Premier League weekend kicks off at St James Park as underwhelming Newcastle host the reigning champions for a lunchtime kick-off. The Magpies may have three wins from five this season but have flattered to deceive during much of that run before losing their unbeaten run at Fulham last time out.

City, meanwhile, dropped points for the first time last time out, rescuing a late point against Arsenal, but have otherwise sweep aside all before them. Erling Haaland already have 10 goals to his name and will be licking his lips at the prospect of more this afternoon against a weak Newcastle defence.

The hosts are sweating over the fitness of star striker Alexander Isak, who faces a late fitness test after damaging a toe. City will be without both Rodri, for the season, and De Bruyne, for at least another week. Kick-off is at 12.30pm BST and you can follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog.

Newcastle host Manchester City today as the weekend Premier League action gets underway.

Champions City are yet to lose this season but it will be fascinating to see how Pep Guardiola finds a solution to Rodri’s absence, with the influential midfielder having suffered a serious knee injury.

While City will be favourites of course, few would doubt they are a different team without the Spanish international in the side.

The hosts will no doubt sense an opportunity here but will need to improve. They may have been unbeaten until last week’s loss at Fulham but little about them has fully convinced yet.
