Y Services for Young People

This has been a very busy year of music making at Y Services.

To kick off with Y Services Has delivered across eight local schools working with young musicians both in junior and secondary settings to make music. Most of the participants had little or no musical experience and so this was a new and exciting challenge for them which they embraced.  Music leaders delivered lunch time sessions, after school music clubs and also focused small group or 1-1 sessions. Young people achieved AQA awards and Bronze arts awards.

Jammit is a weekly music drop in based in Portchester which has attracted a loyal group of young people who have progressed to performance and recording opportunities as well as volunteering. The project is attended by young people from across the borough and has seen young musicians progress from little or no experience to be confident to perform at local venues (including paid gigs) and Ferneham Hall.  Longer serving attendees also support newer members to progress and this has seen some excellent individual success stories.

Summer events in Partnership with Fareham Borough Council which include the D-Day celebrations event at HMS Daedalus, Access All Areas and National Play Day where we worked with over 1000 children and young people in total providing music making activities. These workshops were based in a variety of settings .National Play Day was based at Holly Hill Country Park where over 600 children attended throughout the day and took part in percussion workshops in a woodland setting.

Genesis Studio has just had a full digital revamp and is now being used by young people in the borough to make music and learn valuable technical skills in a studio setting.  We are looking to further develop this work to provide support for young musicians to manage themselves and maximise their potential and presence both online and through personal development goals.

All of this work would not have taken place without funding from Youth Music. We thank them for their support and enabling us to work with young people who may not otherwise get the opportunity. We also want to say thanks to the young people for all their hard work!
