PlayWorks and its ScrapBand - We want your Rubbish!

As Nottingham’s leading resource for all things Play, PlayWorks provideslocal areas with play projects, eco-friendly resources, workshops and training. Last year we took our first steps into Music provision.

A youth music funded project to engage children from refugee communities and disadvantaged areas of Nottingham in making and sharing – some for the very first time via the development of a Scrap Band.

Bassoon, drums, boomwhakers and other instruments were made by the children from materials found in the charity’s ScrapStore who were then joined by artists to learn how to play them. The sessions allowed the children to experience arrange of different musical styles and genres, as well as being encouraged to share their own culture of music- making from their communities. The project saw the growth in confidence and creativity in the children, giving them some therapeutic time away from their everyday life, improving integration and developing friendships.

We are really excited to be carrying on the project for another year. However we continue to need resources, so if any one is getting rid or broken instruments in the East Middlands - we would love ot hear from you.
