Music in Youth Justice settings - a masterclass by the Irene Taylor Trust
Event description
About the Irene Taylor Trust:
Established in 1995 in memory of Irene Taylor, they work with some of the most vulnerable and excluded individuals in our society, inspiring them through the creation of new music. Their projects support NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) young people, ex-prisoners rebuilding their lives on release and people of all ages in prisons.
The individuals they work with are some of the most disadvantaged and marginalised in society, having faced a range of issues, such as abuse, violence, substance misuse, mental health problems, exclusion from school and homelessness. They hope to help participants see beyond these negative experiences to a more positive future.
What the masterclass will cover:
- Context of the Trust – how it came about and the programmes we deliver.
- How they use their model in different settings – practicalities involved working in prisons and with partners outside.
- Creative ways to generate new music with musicians and non-musicians.
- The importance of additional pastoral support – how to help participants to engage and progress.
Who it’s aimed at:
- Practitioners and musicians who are interested in developing their practice and learning more about criminal justice settings.
Please bring with you an instrument – part of the day will be an interactive workshop on creating new music.
The cost of this Masterclass is £85, which will include lunch and light refreshments.
