Ways Into Workshops

Saturday 26 September and Sunday 27 September 

10am-4.30pm

This course will look at the aspects of leading music making in the community; developing clarity, focus and insight and considering workshop pedagogy.

We’ll make music in many musical disciplines and styles in sessions that cover; learning theory, structures, group dynamics and workshop leader’s role.

We’ll look for creative ways to help groups develop confidence, aspiration and ideas.

What to expect

The course has two dimensions: - to pick up skills and techniques to take out into workshops.  - to give you a chance to explore your own creativity. 

You can choose your own path through the weekend with sessions suitable for beginners and more experienced musicians and a structure flexible enough to meet everyone’s needs. There will be a singing supper on Saturday evening in the great venue at the Hothouse.

Tutors We are proud to bring together three brilliant musicians who have years of experience working with people of all ages, in schools, colleges and in the community. Between them they have run a wide and varied range of training courses for professional and community musicians,have gathered ideas and developed many methods of making music with almost any kind of group.Their skills span the broadest range of musical languages, from voice work to brass, song writing to drumming, composition to improvising.

- Peter Moser is a composer, performer, producer, consultant and facilitator. He is also the founder and artistic Director of More Music. He has written scores for theatre, opera and dance projects as well as songs for occasions and large-scale choral and orchestral pieces. He co-edited ‘Community Music:a Handbook’, a book that covers a range of music and music workshop topics and is aimed at inspiring and empowering musicleaders.

- Leon Patel is a artistic Director, Percussion Tutor – Global Grooves, Manchester, UK. Leon is at the helm of the cultural training organisation Global Grooves, having committed over a decade to sharing his passion and knowledge of percussion and song from around the world – including Brazilian, South asian,West african, Cuban, and Western musical styles. Leon’s directorship of Global Grooves, and numerous UK ensembles has facilitated the development of international percussion- driven music and performance arts led social and community projects across the UK.

- Beth Allen is a Voice Specialist, and has ‘creative expression through voice’ at the heart of all her work and play. Beth is a qualified Music Therapist from Guildhall. She consolidated her vocal awareness with an MA in Voice from Central School of Speech and Drama and now teaches drama students, works in SEN settings with voice, uses her vocal skills with language development in Early Years settings and primary schools, and is Artistic Director of the Sacred Sounds Women’s Choir.

Food Tasty food will be provided on site and is included in the cost of the course. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is available but other dietary needs should be specified in advance.

Instruments Please bring your own instruments although we will also have a wide variety of percussion instruments/keyboards to use during the course.
