Kaylum's Experience On The Project

Here is Kaylum talking about what he learned and enjoyed whilst taking part in the Youth Music Project, and also the positive impact it had on him.

Kaylum attended DJ 1-1 sessions at The Hut Youth Centre in 2021, as well as completing his Discover Arts Award. During this time, Covid 19 was still creating challenging circumstances, which made it difficult to work with groups due to social distancing. Fortunately for Kaylum working 1-1 was perfect for his needs, and we were able to build a brilliant relationship with him and really see him develop confidence, a much more positive attitude, and better self esteem.

Kaylum was a young person who had quite a negative experience of school and had been excluded multiple times. He described himself as being "angry",  "a bad kid" and didn't have much belielf in himself.

During the project we not only saw a brillaint change in him, but he was also able realise that he didnt deserve those negative lables, and they wasn't who he really was. It was also very clear, that in the right circumstances and with the right activities - young people who struggle with education can thrive and excel.
