New Music Stage at National Festival of Music for Youth

An exciting new initiative is launched at Music for Youth's National Festival in Birmingham on Friday. Join Music for Youth and Sound and Music to explore New Music Stage, a collaboration with a shared ambition to promote the creation and performance of new music by children and young people.

When asked what aspect of musical activity young people value the most, the majority say that opportunities to be creative are very important to them, whilst the most urgent area of skills development identified by teachers is composing and arranging (Teach Through Music Survey, 2014).

Sound and Music is pleased to be embarking on New Music Stage, a new collaboration with Music for Youth.  We’re coming together with a shared ambition to promote the performance of imaginative and challenging repertoire by young musicians, to make an impact on the development of young talent and to showcase good practice, presenting examples from different educational settings.

New Music Stage begins with an event in Birmingham on 11 July at Music for Youth’s National Festival comprising an afternoon of performances, discussions and presentations bringing together established composers, leading academics, music practitioners and young people.  Presenters include Professor Martin Fautley, Sound and Music CEO Susanna Eastburn and composers Kerry Andrew, David Horne and Damien Harron.

During the event, we will explore what we mean by new music, why should we care about new music and how can we collectively make a difference to the lives of young musicians.

The event will:

  • Announce exciting new projects linked to New Music Stage.
  • Promote performances of imaginative and challenging repertoire by young musicians.
  • Demonstrate good practice, presenting examples from different educational settings.
  • Discuss approaches to support young composers and the teaching of composition.
  • Provide resources, toolkits and contacts.
