Job description

Musinc is seeking an enthusiastic drum tutor to join our team to deliver inclusive and high-quality music making activities to young people, including those facing challenging circumstances.

Activities involve small group drum tuition and band-based tuition, working with a Junior group of ages 7-11 and a Senior group of ages 12-17.

Location: Middlesbrough Town Hall

Session Times: Tuesdays, Juniors: 4.45pm-5.45pm and Seniors: 6pm-7pm

Rate of pay:  £100 weekly fee

Musinc’s rates of pay include time for session planning and weekly set up / pack down of equipment, in addition to delivery within the hours stated above.

This position is self-employed, and contracts will be awarded until March 2025, with the opportunity to extend.

Activity Term dates:

Autumn Term 2024 (11 sessions): 10th, 17th and 24th Sept. 1st, 8th and 15th Oct. 5th, 19th and 26th Nov. 3rd December + Amplify on 10th December

Spring Term 2025 (11 sessions): 14th, 21st and 28th Jan. 4th, 11th and 18th Feb. 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th March + Amplify on 1st April

Responsibilities and Duties

To work within the Musinc team reporting to the Musinc project coordinator and manager, and to undertake the following duties:

  • Plan and deliver small group drum tuition for young people, including those facing challenging circumstances.
  • Work in conjunction with other instrumental tutors (specialisms in Vocals, Guitar/Bass and Keyboard) to take a collaborative approach to leading and planning sessions, including short and long-term goals for the group.
  • Shared set up and pack down of equipment at the starts and ends of sessions.
  • Support young people’s progression musically, personally and socially.
  • Undertake consultation with the young people at the start of each new term and use their input to inform your session planning.
  • Support both groups’ end of term performances at Amplify, our performance event for young people aged 12-18.
  • Work in partnership with the operations team at Middlesbrough Town Hall to ensure smooth delivery of weekly sessions.
  • Provide thorough and concise evaluation reports for your project by completing Musinc surveys annually.
  • Work in line with the Youth Music Quality Framework.
  • Find out about musical progression routes and signpost young people as appropriate.
  • Undertake paid Musinc training opportunities to develop your skills around inclusion and working with young people in challenging circumstances.
  • Please note: Successful candidates will receive a full induction covering processes and expectations which are specific to delivering a Musinc project.

Knowledge, experience and skills required to carry out this role:

Essential (required):

  • Appropriate level of skills and knowledge in drum kit and other styles of drumming
  • Experience delivering inclusive music making sessions to young people, including those facing challenging circumstances
  • A sound understanding of the principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and how this applies to your own practice, or a willingness to develop skills and knowledge in this area.
  • Knowledge of community music practice
  • Ability to reflect, learn and adapt as a practitioner
  • Good organisational skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Good time keeping
  • Open mindedness in relation to musical genres
  • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of teaching and pedagogical approaches, and an ability to adapt to young people’s different learning styles

  • Knowledge of the wider music education sector, both nationally and within the Tees Valley, and where to signpost progression opportunities for young people
