BlueJam Arts enables young people with learning differences to access gamelan

As part of Gamajam, our Youth Music funded project, we have been working with young people taking part in the National Citizenship Service (NCS) and members of The Heathlands Project, a day centre for adults with learning differences.

We find Gamelan instruments are easily accessible to people of all abilities and a wonderful vehicles for making music in a group.  We met every day for a week starting with an introduction to the gamelan, creating our own 'story' and musical exploration of the story, having a lot of laughs on the way and ending the week with a short performance.  The young people doing NCS were introduced to Heathlands Project and found out about volunteer opportunites at the centre - and they threw themselves into the programme with gusto, giving support where needed. What an inspiring week!
