Michael Cretu visits Kámoši

Kámoši Juniors group joined by internationally acclaimed Musician Michael Cretu.

During the past fortnight, Community Arts North West’s Kámoši Juniors group have been joined by internationally acclaimed Musician Michael Cretu at their Saturday morning music workshops in Leigh, Wigan.

Michael’s music roots reach back over 500 years through his family of renowned Romani  musicians, originally from Romania. He is a Composer, Musical Director, and Double Bassist and trained at the Bucharest Music School and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

Michael was brilliant at inspiring the children to use music to tell stories. By the end of the second workshop the group were composing percussion music to a traditional Romani-folk story.

Most of the children had never heard the story before, so it was wonderful to hear Michael tell the tale and encourage each individual to bring the story to life using music.

Michael also taught the group two songs: one traditional Roma song called 'Aiazid' and one of his own compositions. Michael played the tunes on his double bass and the children learnt to sing the songs along with a dance routine.

The live music, dancing, and traditional Romani-folk story have made the first couple of music-workshops in 2016 extremely fun and exciting.

Thank you Michael!
