Strengthening the sector

Mytime Active’s ArtsTrain project delivered an exciting and bespoke CPD event, hosted by the Bromley Youth Music Trust. The training was developed in response to consultation with ArtsTrain’s pool of freelance tutors who requested support in developing improvisational techniques that they could use in diverse settings to facilitate young people’s improvisation and devising skills. Practitioners from ArtsTrain, Bromley and Bexley music hub, Fairbeats and Drake music took part in the day which was delivered by renowned community musician Phil Mullen.

The day was a fantastic chance to network and share practice between South-East London based practitioners who work in a variety of diverse seetings from early years to SEN, young refugees and teenagers in Youth Offending centres. Phil provided an incredible range of easy to use and highly effective games, and techiques which could be used across all the diverse settings. The group gelled icredibly well and made some fantastic music as well as coming away with a toolkit of useful techniques to transfer into their teaching.

TALKING NUMBERS - 11 Music Tutors - Over 150 years of joint music education experience - 6 partner organisations - 2 Music Hubs engaged - 100% of tutors said that they would value more training opportunities

TUTOR'S VIEWS “I valued the opportunity to gain new ideas and meet other practitioners. Days like this are a good energiser!” (Tim Cronin, Music Outreach Coordinator- Bromley)

“The training was very helpful to see how to adapt ways of teaching for people to learn more effectively, it was also great meeting everyone and learning with them.” (Abimaro Gunnell – ArtsTrain Tutor)

“The best aspects of the day for me were learning from the detail and variation of everybody's challenges and solutions.” (James Yarde – ArtsTrain Tutor)

TRAINER'S VIEWS " Training days can support the sector in a number of ways , first through affirming what educators know and do and giving it increased value, secondly providing new material and ways of doing things, thirdly developing deeper levels of individual reflection across the whole range of our work. Finally through building communities of passionate inquiring educators committed to strengthening and developing the field".                  (Phil Mullen – Workshop Trainer)
