Sound Of Bronze - York's youth gamelan ensemble

Event description

A gamelan is a set of bronze percussion instruments from Indonesia, played by a group of people working together as a team. The Youth Gamelan Ensemble offers young people a chance to creatively explore these instruments and learn to play traditional Indonesian music.

Sessions run 5.00-6.15pm on Thursdays during term time, in Room E/050 in the Music Department, University of York, Heslington, York YO10 5DD.

Suitable for young people aged 7-14.

No prior experience is required and you do not need to be able to read sheet music. Gamelan musicians are usually asked to remove their shoes and sit on the floor to play – please get in touch if you have any questions about accessibility.

Cost: £5 per child per session, payable in advance at the start of each half term.

Sibling Discount: If two or more children from the same family are attending, the cost will be £5 for the first child and £3 for each additional sibling.

A number of free bursary places are available (please enquire when booking).

Places are limited and must be booked in advance. Please contact our Gamelan Director, Emily Crossland, on emily.crossland@york.ac.uk for further information and to request a booking form.

The Sound Of Bronze is a project of the Department of Music at the University of York, made possible thanks to support from the National Foundation for Youth Music.
