NCVYS leads response to youth policy remarks made by Education Secretary
Education Secretary Michael Gove’s comments last week that youth policy was no longer a priority for central government has created quite a stir across the youth sector. His remarks, made at an Education Select Committee hearing, conveyed his view that youth policy should become the responsibility of local authorities.
Many youth organisations feel there is a strong need for the co-ordination of youth policy by central government across many areas including employment, education and health.
The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) was quick to respond to Gove’s remarks. NCVYS co-ordinated signatures from the youth sector for an open letter to the Education Secretary demanding urgent clarification of his views.
Given the importance of music education in formal and non-formal settings within the framework of an overall youth policy, Youth Music's Executive Director Matt Griffiths is a signatory on the open letter.
