Emerging young Artists Break Through

The Urban Vocal Group staged its first Artist development showcase concert featuring 6 young artists aged 15 – 18 performing original tracks co-written with local musicians

In 2016 the Urban Vocal Group (UVG) were awarded a grant from Arts Council England to run an artist development programme ‘Breaking Through’ which provided six young UVG singers the opportunity to learn skills in writing, recording, performing and promoting their own music. The young artists were mentored by local musicians Jerry Williams, Andy Muscat, Parv, Mollie Scott and Leonie Tremain whilst also taking part in workshops led by industry professionals. The mentors spent a period of 10 hours with their young artist, crafting their song, assisting them in the studio, providing feedback and support during the whole process. All artists were given a professional photo shoot and valuable tips on image, marketing and press. The new material was performed at the Wedgewood Rooms Portsmouth on the 11th July where artists, mentors and special guests performed original material to an audience of 200. Mentor Andy Muscat, who performed the final set with his band COAX said that “all the breaking through performers were incredible and held the stage like seasoned professionals”

Musical Director Amba Tremain commented “This has been a very exciting project for the UVG and the material produced is of an exceptionally high standard. It really does demonstrate the potential for young people to achieve great things given the right opportunities.” Breaking through artist Beth Parvin (18) said “Not only has it helped me grow in confidence as an artist but it has also helped me to discover my own style and the sound I want to create” Josh Sanderson (16) was one of the youngest artists to take part. He said “the programme has made me a much more confident artists in terms of singing and writing. It has also really helped me to work with others as this was something I struggled with before” UVG Director Charlie Fletcher was delighted with the results. “The UVG starts with singing but it doesn’t stop there. ‘Breaking Through’ gave us the opportunity to take things to the next level and to tap into emerging young talent which may have been overlooked. All of the artists rose to the challenge and I am sure they will soon be making an impact on the local music scene”
